Hi, I'm Luke. sometimes known as Lenlow. That's me on the left there, about 5 years ago. Hey, redesigning websites is a pain. Anyhoo, I live in Boston. I do computer stuff for a living. My hobbies include making mashups and playing them out live. Go over to my music page for that stuff. Or hang out here and listen to me blog. Since most of my free time is music-oriented, that tends to be what I blog about. You've been warned.

Here's a cool article from E! Online about mashups beginning to become popular in America. That discussion forum they're talking about is the same one I've been posting my tunes to, though they don't mention the name.

All those "What ____ are you" quizzes are usually pretty fun... but until today I hadn't seen one that is more interested in putting you down than building you up. I read someone else's and it was similarly derogatory. But I take heart, for most of this description is quite wrong.

You Are: Stairway to Heaven

You're probably really satisfied at this result. Why? Because it's the only Led Zeppelin song you've ever heard. You are a Top 40 junkie, although you probably think you're hip because you listen to "underground", "cool" bands like Dave Matthews and Radiohead. Frankly, my dear, you are a fad.

You wear Old Navy. You follow all the trends. You answered all the quiz questions with the most boring, uninspired choices. You are probably really popular. People who know nothing will always consider you really cool, but the people who really matter will not care much about you because there are way more people out there who are more interesting than you are.

Which Led Zeppelin Song Are You?

Between 6:19 and 6:26 last night, 13 people came to my site by searching for "lenlow" on French Google. I wonder if DJ Zebra mentioned my name on the radio?

Fun game! I think it's called Swingers.

Hey remember that Bowie contest? Me neither. Apparently some high-schooler won it.

The other day Menlow told me about a fun word game he and his coworkers play. It's simple: if you're given a sequence of letters, come up with a word that contains that sequence of letters. (No proper nouns, hyphens, etc.) For example, if I said "ADAC" you could say "headache". It's cool because anyone can make up new ones.

I can't remember any that Matt posed to me, but here are some I came up with:
LJ, FJ, UPO, ZZAN, YPU, OJO, AHO, LCE (my initials!)

Make up your own! Wheee!

Ha... Hotmail and Yahoo might be blocking Gmail invitations.

Fellow word nerds rejoice! I give you a rather exhaustive list of common English errors.

This is one of the coolest applications of Shockwave I have ever seen: Euro 2004 Virtual Replay. Watch reenactments of the biggest plays of all the Euro 2004 matches in a surprisingly realistic manner... and from lots of different camera angles. How do they do that?

Oh, and Typographic Illustrations is cool too.

Hummina hummina hummina... I have butterflies in my stomach. I just received this email:

Hello Luke.
I played your "The harder it comes" in my radio show last week. Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk) heard it, he told me he really loved it.

DJ Zebra

It absolutely made my day.

I signed up for Gmail, the new email provider from Google. It's pretty awesome. 1000 megabytes of storage, and a nice interface as well. It's not quite open to the public yet, but I found out they are offering it to "active" bloggers. So if you are an active blogger, check it out. And if you know me, go ahead and start using lenlow at gmail dot com for my address.

In other news, I'm running in a race in July. But Luke, you may say, you hate running. What's up with that? Well, it's called the Big Man Race, and the minimum weight requirement is 190 pounds. It's 5 miles long, and at three different stops you have to drink a beer and eat a hot dog. Should be fun(ny). I was at 186 lbs on Sunday and I'm already at 188.5 today. My "training" regimen seems to be working: an extra donut at breakfast, and lots of cheeseburgers. I thought it would be kinda funny for me to be doing this since the last time I ran a race (middle school?) I was probably half my current weight. Now I'm a "big man". How ironic.

This dude who calls himself Kitty Glitter has a mashup-oriented internet radio show... and he recently played several of my tunes! This mix features "Last Night" and "Sweet Child O Ravi" (my stuff kicks in at the 20 minute mark). This mix features "Titled" and "Vegas Baby" (starting at the 39 minute mark). He used the not-so-great quality versions of my songs, not the ones currently on my music page... and the encoding rate isn't excellent (48 kbps) but still... I'm flattered! Thanks KG.

I've been working on my mashup for Parkspliced (bootleg version of Blur's Parklife), and I think it's gonna be good. Look for that in another week or so.

I just got an email from the guy making the 2-record collaborative white label on vinyl. Last Night is definitely on it, so that's cooooool. He's sending me ten copies, so that's coooooool. It costs me $122 for the vinyl copies and the overseas shipping, so that's... the price of publicity I suppose. (There's still a donate button on the music page, if you're feeling magnanimous.)

Before today I had only seen this in animated gif form: Vince Carter's dunk in the 2000 Olympics, over the 7'2" Frenchman. I love the look on the little guy's face on the left of the screen. Kinda like "I don't really want to play anymore."

Monday, June 07, 2004
If anyone's in San Fran on Wednesday night, swing by Bootie, a monthly mashup/bootleg party. DJ Jay-R told me that Sweet Child O Ravi is gonna be one of the first songs he plays. Cooool!

In other how-is-this-possible news, the dude from MoistWorks called me a "master DJ". Now that's a stretch.

Nothing is cooler than breakdancing. Even Transformers are doing it. The video gets really good after the 2:15 mark, when the cassette tape Transformer jumps out of the boombox Transformer and tears it UP.

Last night I caught a tiny bit of the National Spelling Bee on TV. Them kids are smart, yo. This article has a video clip of a kid (who went on to get second place) fainting, getting up, and spelling his word correctly.

Some very talented Flash artists have created an awesome video for the Beatles' Come Together.

Speaking of talent, keep an eye out for Hassle the Hoff. Seems like just yesterday I had a lot of respect for Ice-T.

Ever see that Kuerten guy play tennis? Or, I should say, ever hear him play tennis? He sounds ridiculous! Every stroke, no matter how powerful, he emits this pathetic (and hilarious) moan/whimper that sounds like he's crying, or a cartoon ghost, or a crying cartoon ghost. I'd say check it out, but he just got eliminated from whatever tennis thing is going on these days.

Bummer, the Sox scored seven runs last night and still lost to Vlad Guerrero... who had nine RBI.

Way to go New Jersey! "Ladies nights" violate civil rights! Why should the ladies always get in free? I went to some snooty club this spring with my girlfriend and her girlfriends, and after letting in all the women, the bouncer stopped me and charged me $20. And the place sucked. Except the DJ played mashups.

Let's all go to the Glastonbury Festival. Oh wait, I'm in the USA and can't afford it. Bands I like that I will be missing include: Bright Eyes, Chemical Brothers, Franz Ferdinand, Goldfrapp, Groove Armada, Kings of Leon, Lamb, Spearhead, Snow Patrol, The Walkmen, Wilco, Basement Jaxx, Ben Harper, Black Eyed Peas, Keane, Toots & the Maytals, Belle and Sebastian, James Brown, Luke Vibert, Muse, Orbital, Ozomatli, and Suzanne Vega.

Shmannie, you better not miss this. Now it's my turn to live vicariously through you. Go!
