Happy Memorial Day everyone. My weekend was filled with plentiful traditional Mem-Day goodness... plenty of barbecues, and a Sox game Friday (the one that featured the Ortiz grand slam). Exciting poop.
The package for Barber Foods' Chicken Kiev says "If you enjoy our entrees we would really appreciate your 'Telling a Friend' about us." Not sure why "Telling a Friend" is capitalized and in quotes, but... the Chicken Kiev is delicious. So I'm "Telling My Friends." I put a tune together this weekend, but it's only a minute long. Someone at GYBO is doing a project where 60 different people take turns submitting a minute-long mix, with the intended effect to be an hour-long continuous mix. But I feel kinda bad because the guy who went before me didn't leave a whole lot to work with, so I ended up doing something completely different. Hope I don't ruffle any feathers. Anyhoo, I don't think it's to be kept a secret, so... here's Magic Derelicts. You might get more value if you put it on repeat. Ingredients: Grover Washington - Mr. Magic; Digable Planets - Femme Fetal; 3rd Bass - Derelicts of Dialect (a capella); Barry White - I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby. Oh also... I got some absolutely correct feedback about "The Harder It Comes": speed it up and add drums. So I did. (I'm surprised I didn't think of that.) The result is something one could dance to if one were so inclined: The Harder It Comes (Take 2). Thursday, May 27, 2004
Hooray, another awesome music festival I won't be able to attend. The Oxegen Festival in Ireland. Bands there I'd love to see include: Chemical Brothers, Franx Ferdinand, Kings of Leon, Massive Attack, Beta Band, Snow Patrol, Strokes, Basement Jaxx, Black Eyed Peas, Faithless, Felix Da Housecat, Keane, Spearhead, Muse, Shins, Wilco and Wu-Tang Clan.

All right! Saturn's number one! I'm glad mine's a '99 SL2 instead of a '95 SL. Now I have nothing to worry about.
So after hanging around the GYBO forum for a little while, I felt a little out of place. Traditionally, the point of a simple mashup or bootleg was to take a pop hit's a capella and another pop hit's instrumental and lay one on top of the other. Then people on the dance floor will say "oooh!" when they hear something new. This technique is known as "A+B" in the mashup world, and it's the way most mashers get started. The "purists" often frown upon such remedial techniques, but the result can actually be quite good.
Since I never had any a capellas, I never tried "A+B". And I can understand why it gets a bad rap. I understand why many non-mashup DJ's and turntablists scoff at the mashers; they lump everyone into the "A+B" crowd and say "anyone with a computer can make a mashup in ten minutes." And in a way they're right, but the skill is in the song choice and the arrangement. Also, beatmatching is tough (unless your software does it for you). So I finally made a new tune, but don't get your hopes up too much because I'll be the first to admit it's nothing special. I got my hands on a few a capellas for the first time and said hey, why not. It only took me about an hour. The Harder It Comes. Made from the Doves' "Here It Comes" and Daft Punk's "Harder Better Stronger Faster" a capella. Monday, May 24, 2004
Oh, I almost forgot. On the way home from the reunion I was pulled over for going 72 in a 45. This was the first time in over five years I've been pulled over for speeding. The ticket was for $270. Does that seem a bit much to you?
This weekend was my ten-year high school reunion. I had a great time; there was a pretty healthy turnout. A few people I hadn't seen in ten years or more, which was cool. And apparently the consensus was that I was the one who had changed the most since graduation. Several people didn't recognize me. Anyhoo, fun. I'll post a picture or two if someone sends me some.
Now for some unrelated links. These impossible objects are cooool. In B3ta.com's newsletter there was this guy who made a cute little flash tribute to his grandfather. Or so it seemed until the very end... which had me laughing uncontrollably. However, I'm guessing a lot of you will not think it's funny. Too British, maybe. Too tasteless, maybe. Oh well, thought I'd share. Thursday, May 20, 2004
Finally, a real reality dating service. You went to the trouble of putting a pretty girl on your ad to attract attention; why lose your audience with a stupid catchphrase? Also, your fake drop-down boxes aren't fooling anyone. Tell all your cheesy-banner-ad friends too.
...And my very next visit to Hotmail showed this ad again. I still don't understand who the ugly one is. Wednesday, May 19, 2004
As MetaFilter.com said, this article about war video games "would be much funnier if it weren't so true." It's still pretty funny.
I want that "Public Support" meter to rise and fall according to Troops Lost, Length of Conflict, Innocents Killed and Whether or Not There is Anything Else On TV That Week. Oh also: read Jon Stewart's commencement address for William and Mary. The last paragraph had me LOL.
How bout that Randy Johnson? Last night he became only the 17th pitcher to throw a perfect game. And at age 40 years, the oldest. Impressive.
Oh and I keep forgetting to mention the concert I went to Saturday night. The artist's name is RJD2. Go ahead and make your Star Wars jokes (as someone named Luke I've heard a few), but this guy was awesome. He's a turntablist who is kind of in his own category. He splices together songs that nobody has ever heard of to make new songs that sounds very fresh and original. Kind of like what I try to do, only with much greater success. It was great; he had four turntables, and he didn't even use headphones. That was pretty amazing... unless the records he used were pressed by him with the exact sounds and BPM he wanted... but still... Tuesday, May 18, 2004
Public Enemy put out a 2-disc set of "brand new beats and loops" called Welcome to the Sampledome. Uh, I want that. At first I thought it was a compilation of songs they've sampled, but it ain't. Brand new beats and loops.

Why are all the great music festivals far away? Get a load of the lineup for the Rock Werchter Festival in Belgium. I'd love to see Basement Jaxx, Cypress Hill, Spearhead, Black Eyed Peas, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Wilco, and Wu-Tang Clan... and those aren't even some of the bigger names on the docket (Phil Collins, Pink, Oasis, Sean Paul, Korn, Metallica, The Darkness, Lenny Kravitz, David Bowie).
Beh, I got plans for July 4 weekend anyway. Good ol' camping with the frisbee team. Friday, May 14, 2004
Hooray! My computer is working again, and better than ever. That makes me happy. Many thanks to you who donated.
While part of me is frustrated that I couldn't put together anything for the Bowie competition, the other part of me is largely relieved that I don't have to toil over it unproductively anymore. As I mentioned before I do have an assignment for the upcoming ParkLife bootleg album, and it's going well. (Oh and it also looks like they might use my suggestion for a title: "KrapLife".) Computer update: it's not the motherboard, it's the Pentium chip. It pooped the proverbial bed. (Proverbs 3:27 I think.) So I gotta get me one of those. I'll probably be picking one up this weekend, if not before. If you feel like helping a brother out, you can to help defray the cost. And I will continue to provide 100% FREE MUSIC DOWNLOADS!!!! of which there will be more when I resurrect my 'puter.
And I will definitely not be entering the Bowie contest (deadline is Monday). Not just because of the downtime, but because I didn't have much to go with anyway. Oh well.
What was the name of that cartoon back in the day that featured characters who were crosses between different kinds of animals? For instance, "Tycoon" was part tiger and part raccoon. My first thought was "The Wuzzles" but I might just be making that up.
At any rate... I was going to introduce this gallery with some witty reference to that cartoon but I can't. Some skilled Photoshoppers have blended various animals to get some pretty cool results. Monday, May 10, 2004
Seems like I have some sort of affinity for videos of people doing things really fast. Here's another episode: video games. All kinds of impressive speed records for all kinds of games, including most of the classics I played growing up. Not that I'm done growing up or anything.
I broke my computer on Saturday, which is a bummer. I think I must have screwed something up installing a new video card... my monitor (and other monitors I've tried) don't know that they're hooked up to a computer. So I can't see anything. I hope my trusty coworker can help me out in time for me to put something respectable together for the Bowie contest.
In other news, yesterday was the three-year anniversary of LenLowLand. Hooray! Friday, May 07, 2004

Have you ever taken a test, and scored 58%, and been really happy about it? I have. About half an hour ago. As the result I am now a IBM Certified Solution Developer for WebSphere Portal V5.0. I only needed 54% to pass. It was a pretty tough test.

No news. Which I guess is good news, as they say.
Fun fact: in an international friendly in 1989, at the age of forty-something, Rod Stewart scored a goal for the Scottish national team against a fully-equipped English squad at Wembley Stadium. Another fun fact: The Red Sox are really frustrating. (Tell your friends, they'll be amazed.) |
