Hi, I'm Luke. sometimes known as Lenlow. That's me on the left there, about 5 years ago. Hey, redesigning websites is a pain. Anyhoo, I live in Boston. I do computer stuff for a living. My hobbies include making mashups and playing them out live. Go over to my music page for that stuff. Or hang out here and listen to me blog. Since most of my free time is music-oriented, that tends to be what I blog about. You've been warned.

Mash-ups have been getting more and more visibility lately. Today CNN had an article on the Bowie contest, and yesterday Metafilter linked to "London Booted". So that's cool.

What's not cool is that I'm still not feeling at all confident about my chances in the Bowie contest. It's undoubtedly attracting some top talent, and I'm pretty low on ideas. Oh well, there's still time.

The guy who organized "London Booted" is now organizing the same treatment for Blur's "Park Life" album, and I get to do one of the B-sides. So that's fun. As long as it doesn't suck. But I'm also anxious to get back to doing whatever I want; restrictions can be annoying.

UPDATE: The Bowie contest just got listed on Fark. Great, now everyone knows about it. I can just see it now: Fatboy Slim, DJ Shadow and DJ Danger Mouse facing off in the finals.

Floats is a fun game. I finished it, and got 6698 points. While I was on my coffee break, of course.

My brother Matt has announced the retirement of his blog. One day he will return to the interweb, but who knows in what form. Until then, sift through his archives (three years' worth!)... glean his words of wisdom about math, politics, religion, and life. Rest in peace, IMFAQ.

(Hey Matt, is this going to mean I'll be hearing a lot of "Hey Luke, tell the interweb I said..."?)

If you see a new Lincoln Mercury Mountaineer commercial, and there's a guy looking through the sunroof and smiling, that's my friend Nathan. Neato!

I found this very entertaining website via FluxBlog: Songs To Wear Pants To. This guy takes email requests and creates brief songs based on them. He's pretty talented too. My favorites are "Toilet Flushing Shelving Unit", "Little EEEE Foo Foo", and the one where he raps without using the letter E.

I highly recommend giving London Booted a listen. Unless you're the 90% of my audience that doesn't like rap, or techno, or The Clash. Various lads from GYBO have contributed remixes of every track on the Clash's "London Calling" album, and the results are very impressive. Feel free to donate before downloading, as these guys work hard.

When I arrived at GYBO they were just putting the finishing touches on this, and they needed one more track. They invited me to do it, but they wanted it done in three days' time so I couldn't commit. I'm not sure I could have matched the quality of these guys... but the publicity would have been cool. I have a feeling London Booted will become rather popular.

"I Changed My Mind" is so funky. I've been listening to it more and more, when I'm not trying to force David Bowie to inspire me. And it's great. I'm probably gonna get the CD... now I just need to figure out what the CD is. It's either "Latyrx" or "Lyrics Born & the Poets of Rhythm". If I had heard the non-live version of "I Changed My Mind" before I went T-shirt shopping at the concert Thursday, I would have made a purchase. DJ Shadow played the video on his DVD turntable and it was cool.

David Bowie: Would it have been that hard to make a hit song that featured a drum solo?

Last night I went to see DJ Shadow with Quannum/Blackalicious. I've been a big fan of DJ Shadow (pictured digging at left) for a long time; I love the stuff he mixes together, and the things he does with drum samples are both mind-boggling and rump-shaking. Anyhoo, I'm not sure exactly what Quannum is. I think it's kind of like a group of artists, in the same way that the Native Tongues consists of De La, Tribe, JB's, and some lesser-knowns. So I think Quannum consists of DJ Shadow, Blackalicious/Gift of Gab, Latyrx, and there was one other group... so this concert was basically DJ Shadow and two other DJ's spinning the whole time, while 5 other MC's took turns with their stuff. Overall, it was OK. I wanted to hear way more Shadow than I did. He only did his own thing for like 5 minutes. Bummer. But one of the MC's, "Lyrics Born" (pictured at right), I really liked. He's part of the group Latyrx... or maybe he is Latyrx, I'm not sure... but if you get a chance check out the tunes "Baby Don't Tek No" and "I Changed My Mind". Good poop. He's got a cool gruff voice and he looks like Plug 3.

The coolest thing about the concert was that (for the first time in the history of concerts, we were told) a "DVD turntable" was used. And this thing was cool. There was a big video display, and DJ Shadow would throw on a DVD and scratch it... so as you heard the scratching, you saw the DVD going backward and forward to match the scratching exactly. It was awesome, and I could see this sort of thing getting huge.

Anyone ever used AudioScrobbler? It sounds like a great idea... it keeps track of what songs you listen to on your computer, and keeps stats for everyone, and you can find out who has similar tastes and discover new music and stuff. I haven't used it yet but I might. I already have an idea of where to start looking for people with good taste.

UPDATE: Whoa, they gave me my own forum! If you sign up, say hello.

I am excited... it's looking like there might be some Lenlow tracks available on vinyl in the near future. The blokes over at the Get Your Bootleg On board are putting together a collaborative white label album (or two) and on it will be either "Last Night" or "Sweet Child O Ravi" (formerly titled "Sweet Jones"), or possibly both. It will cost me money. But in the end I will have ten copies of the record and a little publicity. So that's pretty cool.

Not sure when I'll be posting new music next. For the next few weeks I'll be focusing on the David Bowie contest, and if inspiration strikes very soon this Lamb contest.

April 15 is National High-Five Day. Bonus Putty points if you wear an 8-ball jacket.

Ooh, the Annotated Beastie Boys. And you thought rappers didn't make any sense...

Hmm... a mash-up competition... the prize is a new Audi TT... hmm...

Don't vote yet.

If Wing and William Hung can make money, so can I. I'm just going about it all wrong.

Wait a second... "William Hung" is just "Wing" with "lliamhu" in the middle! Come to think of it, I've never seen them in the same place at the same time...

I really really like this: the UMass Front Percussion Ensemble plays Radiohead's "Paranoid Android".

Have a great weekend everybody. Look for me tomorrow night at the Sox game... I'll be on THE GREEN MONSTER. Woohoo! Anyone have a message for Manny?

I think my music is finally reaching people other than my devoted LenLowLand audience, which is nice. I posted a couple songs to the "Get Your Bootleg On" discussion forum and they were well-received.

Apparently there is a market for the kind of stuff I do, and it's mostly popular in the UK. It's called "mash-up" or "bootleg"... in fact I don't even know the difference between those two terms. It's usually characterized by DJ's taking two songs and playing them on top of each other, especially the vocals of one and the instrumental of the other. So I don't completely fit in with that crowd. I can't do stuff live or anything. So I'll just keep making stuff that I think sounds good, and see what happens.

Check out McSleazy, an established bootlegger/masher-upper. He runs that discussion forum and he's got skillz. And he thinks I have promise!

Also, I also got a shout-out from FluxBlog, that site I recommended last week. (Thanks!) So I got that goin for me, which is nice.

If anyone else out there likes what I do, tell your friends. Play me at parties. Give me constructive criticism. Send me money. Give me suggestions.

Seacrest out

I like this article about the Sox a lot more than that last one. It's pretty convincing, in my completely unbiased opinion.

Two hours till gametime... ackity ack

Whoa! DRS1 just got back from Costa Rica last week, and he has some sweet video of him jumping off a bridge. Great cinematography... I thought Super Dave actually plummeted to his death. But he didn't. He told me so.
