Cool! A picture of Etna erupting taken from 500 miles up.
Cool! A pool table that shows you where you should shoot, with lasers and such.
R.I.P. Jam Master Jay.
As Matt is describing better than I am, Run DMC was one of the groups that turned me on most to rap and hip hop, and Jam Master Jay was largely responsible. You know when there's one part of one song that is so good you keep playing just that part over and over again? I think that sort of thing is rare even with me, but that's the way it was on "Peter Piper" during the line "He's like King Midas, as I was told, everything that he touched turned to gold". Not only was Jam Master Jay doing the scratching that made that part so great, but that song is one of many of Run and DMC's tributes to the their DJ. Gosh darn that DJ made my day. Huh????? The Montreal Expos might share Fenway Park with the Sox next year???? Well that's kinda cool... after all, they'll get more people to watch their games down here.
Update... this was just a rumor. Apparently some NY reporter made it up or something. I guess they run out of things to write about when the Yanks don't make it to the World Series, so they visit the land of make-believe.
I was never any good at the Rubik's cube. My solution was to remove the stickers and put them back on. Regardless, this Flash version of Rubik's Cube is really slick.

Despite how much I correct other people's spelling, punctuation and grammar, I don't think I could handle being an English teacher. This would drive me absolutely crazy.

Isn't it ironic that the more "manly" things in life are actually the things upon which women frown most? I'm not talking about the belching and the football and the beer and the emotionlessness and all. After I chainsawed my first tree recently, I could sense the pride from uncle and grandfather as they gave me pointers. Then I turned around and there were mother and girlfriend, rolling their eyes and shaking their heads. After all, I had just killed a tree in order that Uncle Tom might have a birch log to decorate his fireplace with. But it was just a tree. Anyway, the latest chapter was Friday afternoon, when our boss took us to a shooting range. He owns a .300 Winchester Magnum rifle and a cool compound hunting bow, both of which I got to try out. The rifle was almost as big as me, and slightly more powerful. I was amazed at how accurate I could be with a target 100 yards away; I shot about as well as my boss. I give most of the credit to Leon's lesson for Mathilda in "The Professional." After all... "The rifle is the first weapon you learn how to use. The better you get, the closer you get to the client. The knife, for example, is the last weapon you learn." I started with the rifle, tried out some handguns, and finally tried out my boss's cool hunting bow. Shooting is not something I've always wanted to do, and I only went because every one else was going. (And later they jumped off a bridge so I did too.) But Adrienne and a few other female friends let me know that they weren't impressed, and I'm sure mother, sister etc. will do the same when they read this. But oh well. At least I didn't go hunting... yet...
Saturday I was coerced into playing in a frisbee tournament. That was a pretty good time. I played about two points of every game, which was just the right amount of exercise I was looking for. Fortunately I was used as a "just in case" sub and they didn't depend on me too much to do anything good. Then Saturday night Spam (my summer frisbee team) had our end-of-season party and award ceremony, which was pretty fun. Good to see the whole gang together again. Ade and I brought a ten-dollar bottle of wine, but for some reason people opted for the three bottles of 30-dollar wine that someone else brought. Oh well, at least people enjoyed the Bud Light we picked out. And there was lots of sushi, both homemade and professionally made... both delicious. Sunday I went to MLS Cup 2002 with Dave and our friend Annie. That was loads o' fun. Gillette Stadium is beautiful, and I was proud to see it jam-packed for a soccer game. Unfortunately our Revs lost, but it was a great game. L.A. scored an impressive goal in the second period of overtime. What's interesting is that even though my team lost, I enjoyed the game so much more than I would have if I hadn't cared who won. Rooting for a team makes all the difference. After the game we filed out with everyone else, walked to my car on the far edge of the parking lot, and attempted to leave. After about fifteen minutes of literally not moving, we parked the car and juggled the ol' soccer ball for a couple hours. That was a lot of fun, and I'm glad I came prepared. All in all, from the time we left our place to the time we returned was exactly NINE hours. Oy. Finally: try Wendy's new Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich, the heir apparent to the Monterey Ranch throne of chicken sandwich goodness. It's good. Friday, October 18, 2002
Time for some amusement, brought to you by the blokes at b3ta.com:
Wheelbarrow Freestyle. Watch the video. Foreign Triscuit Off-Road Racing!!!! A fascinating story about some MIT students cleaning up in Vegas.
I have a real-world math problem that I need assistance with. It's from my Dad, whose colleague needs to organize a cross-country running league.
"11 teams, six dates for meets. Each team should face each of the other teams twice. I think that means a total of 110 meetings (for everyone to see each other once it would be 55). So if on the first day of meets you had six teams run against each other at one place and the other 5 run against each other at another place you would have taken care of 25 of the 110 meetings. [Nice work on the math, Dad!] If on five of the dates you have a 5 team race, a 4 team race and a dual meet, and on the sixth date you have a 6 team race and a five team race, you could get the 110 meetings necessary." So there are six separate dates for meets. It doesn't matter how many meets there are per date, or how many teams ( > 1) per meet, as long as each team competes against every other team exactly twice. My brief trial and error attempts were fruitless, but I may try again this weekend. Wednesday, October 16, 2002
Here's a soothing diversion: Legato. Listen to the different parts of the music as you move the dude around the other dancers.
Here's an online demo of a Sametime bot that we created: . If your company had Lotus Sametime, you could add the CRMBot to your buddy list, and ask it questions whenever you want. It can retrieve contact names, companies and phone numbers from a database instantly. Rather helpful, if you ask me.

The ten nominees for MLS Goal of the Year are available here, with voting. That is some quality programming. Three of the nominated goals came from the Revolution's own Taylor Twellman, this year's MLS scoring leader! That is rather impressive, even though I voted for Ronnie Ekelund's goal.

Happy Columbus Day, everyone. Unless you're one of those people that hates Columbus. Either way, I have to work. But that's okay because I'm doing fun stuff. Have I mentioned Lotus Sametime yet?
This weekend we had our family work day at Grandpa's cabin in New Hampshire. That's another kind of work that is really fun. I cut down a tree with a chainsaw; that made me feel manly. Nevermind that the womenfolk were rolling their eyes because I killed a tree for the sole purpose of supplying Uncle Tom with a good-looking birch log for his fireplace. I am quite happy to report that the New England Revolution are headed to MLS Cup 2002! They play the L.A. Galaxy at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. And I'm going to be there! This could be like when the Pats won the Super Bowl... except New England won't care. Another cool sports story is that the Angels made it to the World Series for the first time ever. Their number nine hitter Adam Kennedy hit three home runs in yesterday's game! He only hit seven homers during the whole regular season. Friday, October 11, 2002
Some people have too much time on their hands. And are very talented. I give you: a working harpsichord built out of Lego.

If you visited LenLowLand yesterday, you probably noticed the link to LenLowChat 2.0 that was near the top of the page. It worked very well for the three visitors I had, though I would have liked to see more than one person in there at a time. I decided to disable it because (1) it won't get much use during work hours, I'm guessing (2) When people go in, I won't know it if I'm doing work. So people would watch me on my webcam without my knowing, and I don't much care for that idea. So that version of LenLowChat was how Sametime's online meetings work out of the box, but now I'm starting to do my own development and customization of the tools with java. It's tricky stuff, but it's fun.
Another aspect of Sametime we're getting into is the development of "bots". You may have seen some bots that work with AOL IM, but we're making ones that are more business-suited. For example, we made one that looks people up in our company directory and spits out a phone number and other information. So basically we can add a user named "PhoneBot" to our buddy list. If someone here wanted to know my number, they could chat with PhoneBot and say "who is Enlow", and it would immediately spit out a lot of information about me. It's pretty cool stuff. If anyone wants to learn more about saving your company travel costs by using online meetings, just let me know and I would be happy to demonstrate. If I'm logged into Sametime then click on the green link at the top of the page to chat with me. If I'm offline, feel free to e-mail me. Hmmm... quite the dearth of comments... must be all the boop-bee-boop talk scaring y'all away. Monday, October 07, 2002
Take a look at a Lego version of M.C. Escher's "Ascending and Descending". Very cool. They say there were no camera tricks, but the photo was distorted slightly. Even so, would anyone like to offer any insight into how they pulled this off?

I'm doing some cool stuff at work, boy howdy. I've been learning all the ins and outs of Sametime 3.0, a new business collaboration tool brought to you by Lotus. It lets you hold meetings with audio and video conferencing, whiteboards and screen-sharing. It also has chat features that can replace AOL Instant Messenger but still let you chat with your AIM buddies. Anyway, as IBM business partners we're selling Sametime. We're targeting medium to large companies who travel a lot, because one of the huge selling points is that Sametime will significantly cut down on your travel costs. We saved GE Capital nearly $20 million per year in travel expenses. If your company might be interested in something like this, let me know. We are giving a Sametime presentation in Waltham, MA on October 8.
For a little demo, check out my name below. If I'm logged into our Sametime server, my name will light up. Anyone can click on it to chat with me. Once we're chatting, you or I could click "Add Tools", and we can turn it into an audio/video/whiteboard/screensharing extravaganza! Thursday, October 03, 2002
Good news everyone, the Revs won their first ever playoff series last night! I hope they make it to MLS Cup, since I plan to be there. Word on the street is Gillette Stadium is pretty shweet.
If you ever visit Fark, you've probably seen their occasional links to "Strong Bad E-mail". I've always passed it by, but on Katie's request recently I decided to check it out. And it is FUNNY. Strong Bad is some weird character that sounds a lot like Triumph the Insult Dog sometimes, but his humor is quite original and quite amusing. If you have some spare time I recommend checking out the first one and making your way to the most recent one. There are some really funny ones in the thirties (e.g. sbemail37.html).
